The I Madonnari Italian Street Painting Festival is an annual two-day event in San Luis Obispo, California. It takes place on the grounds of the 18th century Mission San Luis Obispo. I was lucky to be there for the festival this year in September, Patterned on an Italian tradition dating back to the 16th century, artists create magnificent works of art, in chalk.

Here is a partial display of photos from the event. It was a beautiful day but the sun and shade does not do justice to some of the artwork. As for perspective, I would guess the artists space to create the chalk drawing was about 6 x 8 feet. As you will see, they work while festival attendees watch, and have to either kneel, crawl, sit or use a clever aid such as a stool or milk crate. Among the many wonderful attributes of the city, San Luis Obispo, is that it seldom rains!
